What does a chiropractor do?
A chiropractor diagnoses and treats conditions related to the spine, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves — without the use of drugs or surgery. At Joly Chiropractic, Dr. Joly uses the Gonstead Technique to precisely identify spinal misalignments that are causing nerve interference and delivers targeted adjustments to correct them. He also uses Active Release Technique (ART) to treat soft tissue injuries including scar tissue, adhesions, and fascial restriction throughout the body.
How much does a visit to Joly Chiropractic cost?
The initial consultation is free of charge. The first exam and treatment visit is $65. Follow-up visits range from $45 to $65 depending on the type and complexity of care provided. X-rays are billed separately and are only recommended when Dr. Joly determines they are clinically necessary. We accept credit cards, debit cards, cash, checks, and Apple Pay. We also work with many insurance providers — call (510) 249-9037 and we’ll verify your benefits before your appointment.
Does Joly Chiropractic accept insurance?
Yes. We work with many major insurance plans and are happy to verify your coverage in advance so you know what to expect. Just call (510) 249-9037 before your appointment and we’ll check your benefits for you. For patients injured in auto accidents, care is typically covered at no out-of-pocket cost — and we handle all the insurance documentation on your behalf.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept credit cards, debit cards, cash, personal checks, and Apple Pay. For patients with insurance, we’ll file claims on your behalf and clearly communicate any copays or out-of-pocket portions before treatment begins.
Will Dr. Joly take X-rays on my first visit?
X-rays are taken only when Dr. Joly determines they are clinically necessary based on the results of your examination. We do not take X-rays as a routine procedure for all patients. If your examination findings suggest that imaging would meaningfully guide your care — for example, to evaluate disc height, spinal curvature, or structural abnormalities — Dr. Joly will explain why X-rays are indicated and answer any questions you have before proceeding.
How long does a first chiropractic appointment take?
Your initial visit at Joly Chiropractic typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. This includes your consultation with Dr. Joly, a comprehensive Gonstead spinal examination, and initial treatment when appropriate. Follow-up visits are generally shorter, usually 15 to 30 minutes depending on the type of care being provided that day.
What is the Gonstead Technique?
The Gonstead Technique is a specific, systematic approach to chiropractic care developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead, who was a mechanical engineer before becoming a chiropractor. It uses a thorough multi-step examination — including motion palpation, static palpation, instrumentation, and X-ray analysis when indicated — to identify precisely which vertebrae are misaligned and causing nerve interference. Only after this analysis does the Gonstead practitioner determine where to adjust and how. This specificity is what makes it one of the most effective and respected chiropractic methods available. Learn more on our Gonstead Technique page.
What is Active Release Technique (ART)?
Active Release Technique is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue treatment system that addresses dysfunction in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. It was developed by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP, and uses over 500 specific treatment protocols to identify and correct the adhesions and scar tissue that develop from overuse, injury, and repetitive strain. Dr. Joly has been certified in ART since 2006. Conditions commonly resolved through ART include back pain, neck pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow. Learn more on our Active Release Technique page.
What conditions does Joly Chiropractic treat?
We treat a broad range of musculoskeletal and nerve-related conditions including low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc problems, headaches and migraines, whiplash, auto accident injuries, sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, hip pain, knee injuries, ankle sprains, arm and wrist pain, and more. We also offer specialty protocols for asthma, chronic headaches, acid reflux, and chronic sinus and allergy conditions. Visit our conditions page and services page for the complete list.
How soon after a car accident should I see a chiropractor?
As soon as possible — ideally within the first 72 hours following the accident. Whiplash and other auto accident injuries often don’t produce obvious symptoms immediately because adrenaline and inflammation can mask pain in the early hours. However, the underlying spinal misalignments and soft tissue damage are already present. The earlier we can evaluate and begin treating your injuries, the lower the risk of them developing into chronic long-term problems. In the vast majority of auto accident cases, treatment costs are covered with no out-of-pocket expense to you. Read more on our whiplash and auto accident page.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes — chiropractic care is considered one of the safest forms of healthcare for musculoskeletal conditions. Serious complications from chiropractic adjustments are extremely rare. Dr. Joly’s use of the Gonstead Technique adds an additional layer of safety: because each adjustment is preceded by a thorough examination that identifies exactly which joints to treat and in what direction, there is no guesswork involved. Dr. Joly also adjusts the force and technique based on each patient’s individual condition, age, and tolerance.
Can chiropractic care help with headaches and migraines?
Yes. Many chronic headaches — including tension headaches and certain types of migraines — are directly linked to cervical spinal misalignments and soft tissue tension in the upper neck and base of the skull. By correcting these underlying issues through targeted Gonstead adjustments and Active Release Technique, we can significantly reduce both the frequency and severity of headaches in many patients — without medication. If headaches are affecting your quality of life, a chiropractic evaluation is a valuable first step.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in California?
No. In California, chiropractic care is a direct-access service — meaning you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Joly without a referral from your primary care physician. Simply call (510) 249-9037 or use our online appointment form to book your visit. If we determine during your evaluation that another type of specialist would better serve your needs, we’ll let you know and can help coordinate a referral at that time.
What should I expect to feel after my first chiropractic adjustment?
Most patients feel immediate relief or a noticeable reduction in pain and stiffness following their first adjustment. Some people experience a mild, temporary soreness in the treated areas — similar to what you might feel after a good workout — which typically resolves within 24 hours. Occasionally, patients feel more energized or notice improved range of motion right away. Every patient responds a little differently, and Dr. Joly will let you know what to expect based on your specific condition and what was addressed during your visit.
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
The number of visits depends on the nature and severity of your condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds to care. Acute injuries often resolve in relatively few visits, while chronic conditions or significant structural problems may require a more extended care plan. After your initial examination, Dr. Joly will give you a clear, honest recommendation — including expected frequency and duration — so you can make an informed decision about your care. There is never any pressure to commit to more visits than you’re comfortable with.
Do you treat children and seniors?
Yes. The Gonstead Technique is safe and effective for patients of all ages. For younger patients, Dr. Joly uses gentler, age-appropriate adjusting techniques designed for developing spines and joints. For seniors, chiropractic care is a valuable tool for managing age-related spinal degeneration, improving mobility, and reducing chronic pain — often with significantly less risk than long-term medication use. We welcome the whole family at Joly Chiropractic.
